Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei has expressed discontent over the manner in which Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV on Tuesday, Cherargei said that the first time county boss deserves fair treatment, adding that he is still innocent until proven guilty in the court of law.

He, however, said that he supports the idea of governors accused of graft being barred from accessing their office. He went on to argue that county bosses can, however, discharge their duties elsewhere.

“I agree that governors should be barred from accessing the office because it becomes a scene of a crime but that one does not prevent a governor from executing their functions from any part of the county…” he said.

On the issues of senators defending Sonko, Cherargei said that the governor is entitled to representation. He also said that the lawmaker is only practising their profession, which has nothing to do with their capacities in leadership. He also said that the senators and MPs have no conflict of interest on the matter.

“I want to assure Kenyans that there is no direct conflict of interest when senators or members of parliament represent their clients,” he added.

He further argued that the process of impeaching a governor is not part of the law but politics.

“…the impeachment process is a political process it is not a legal process," he said.

Sonko is set to appear in court on Wednesday for his bail ruling.
