A section of politicians from the Mt Kenya region has proposed Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri as the best man to take over as the next Mt Kenya kingpin.
The three lawmakers; Munene Wambugu (Kirinyaga Central), Kabinga Wathayu (Mwea) and Zachary Thuku (Kinangop) on Friday said that the CS is best placed to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking at Nyaikungu Primary School in Kirinyaga, the trio argued that Kiunjuri has the required experience.
They said that he should be the man to show the region the next political step to take after President Uhuru retires in 2022.
"The CS is an experienced leader so he should be appointed as the region's spokesman. We want him to lead us and tell us the political direction to take," said Mr Thuku.
They vowed to lobby for Kiunjuri going forward, terming him a vibrant man who can well articulate the people's rights, adding that they want him to take over immediately.
The MPs made the remarks in the presence of Mr Kiunjuri.
The CS, however, chose to address the politicians' concerns about the region not getting fair share of the national cake despite playing a major role in the growth of the national economy.
He called for unity among area leaders, saying that a divided community will result in slowed development, at a time when a division is openly visible in the region.
"If the leaders are divided, the region will lag behind in development," he said.
