Speaking on the Jeff Koinange Live (JKL) show on Wednesday that aired on Citizen Television, the outspoken Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislator said that the Jubilee party had a right to field a candidate.

“The handshake does not mean that ODM dies or Jubilee dies; we still have ODM, we still have Jubilee, it’s just that the rules of the game changed” Millie Odhiambo said.

She downplayed fears that the president's blindsiding support for the governing Jubilee party candidate would have a negative impact on the handshake.

There had been fears expressed by a section of social media users that the endorsement of Mariga by the head of state would negatively affect the handshake.

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino strongly expressed his disappointment at President Uhuru Kenyatta move that took Kenyans by surprise.

The president had, by and large, remained silent on who he would throw his weight behind only for pictures of him with the former Inter Milan forward to hit social media.

It was not clear whether the head of state would join the veteran football star on the campaign trail in Kibra.

Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja had said that he had tried to engage the party leadership about not fielding a candidate but he was not successful.
