Business came to a standstill in Nyanguru, Kitutu Chache South in Kisii County for the better part of Sunday afternoon after a suspected motorbike thief was roughed up by angry residents.
Charles Nyambariga, area community policing chairman who witnessed the incident said the suspect, Samuel Abuga, stole a motorbike three months ago and fled to Nairobi before he was arrested.
"Abuga was arrested in Nairobi for stealing a motorbike. Abuga and the owner of the motorbike reached an agreement to solve the matter without involving police officers. The owner of the motorbike today hired four men who stormed Abuga's home whisked him away as they beat him before police officers from Nyatieko rescued him," said Nyambariga.
According to Nyambariga, Abuga was attacked because he has not paid the motorbike owner as per their agreement.
Kisii Police Commander Martin Kibet said the suspect was rushed to Iranda Level Four Hospital where he is fighting for his life following the severe injuries inflicted on him by the attackers.
"The suspect is stable in hospital. Two men who attacked him were arrested and currently being detained at Kisii Central police station. Abuga had already paid the motorbike owner Sh14,000," said Kibet.
