Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives on Sunday recovered bank receipts of transactions from accounts held by late Catholic Priest Michael Maingi Kyengo in a house which was rented by a suspect in the murder case.

Michael Mutunga; the key suspect in the case, is reported to have rented the house where blood-stained clothes, supermarket receipts, and newly purchased items worth Sh6,000  were recovered. 

According the DCI, the detectives also managed to discover a garage where the late Maingi's car was changed from black to white.

"DCI Detectives investigating the ghastly murder of Fr Michael Maingi yesterday recovered bank withdrawal receipts from the late's bank accounts at a house in Mnarani-Kilifi County, which the main suspect; Michael Mutunga rented two days after the monstrous act.

"Also recovered were newly purchased household items totaling to approximately Sh60,000, supermarket receipts, and blood stained clothes which have been taken to the government chemist for forensic analysis. The garage where the late's car colour was changed from black to white on 12th October, 2019 also identified. Further investigations still ongoing," DCI tweeted.

The late priest is alleged to have been kidnapped while traveling to his Thatha parish in Masinga and then strangled to death. 

His body which had been buried in a grave near a seasonal river in Embu by the killers was exhumed on October 16, 2019.

The priest is reported to have been at his home in Tala where he had gone to visit his parents on the fateful day.

On Friday, detectives arrested 44-year-old Solomon Mutava after he was found in possession of the priest’s car.
