The MP was in the company of census enumerators during Thursday's pre-listing ahead of the main census exercise scheduled countrywide on Saturday.

Reports indicate that the attack took place at Masalale area, which borders neighboring Eldas constituency. The border has been contested by two clans.

"Wajir North member of parliament, Ahmed Abdisalan has reportedly survived gun attack at a contested location between Eldas and Wajir North constituencies," RTN Somali TV reported.

The MP, who was later rushed to a local hospital, was rescued by his security team, which managed to repulse the attackers before evacuating the MP.

Sources indicate that security forces in Wajir have already summoned Mr Ibrahim together with his Eldas counterpart Adan Kaynan.

The two are expected to record a statement on Friday (today) over animosity between two clans which occupy the contested region in Wajir.

'Eldas member of parliament and his wajir North counterpart has been summoned to appear before county security committee to shed light on what they know regarding attack on census officials and local leaders. They are expected to record statement at 9am in Wajir," added the report.

Clan rivalry in the Northern Frontier Districts is common, and at times it contributes during elections. The region is keen to have more people listed in census.
