According to the family, they brought their mother who was seriously sick at the hospital at around 1 am.

She was immediately wheeled to the emergency room and doctors began treating her.

The doctors requested the family to get rush to the hospital's pharmacy to get medicine but founf it closed forcing them to go to Tala town, 5km away to get it.

"We brought her at around 1 am she was immediately taken to the emergency room. After some time the doctors requested for medicine which we were supposed to get from the pharmacy but we found it closed," said Dominic Mulei, a family member.

"We were told the pharmacist's on duty whereabouts was not known. We were advised to find the drug in Tala. We are shocked that such a big hospital didn't have another person to take over if the pharmacist was not around," he added.

Mulei said they received the sad news of the demise of their mother even before they got to Tala.

"We didn't reach Tala We received a phone call telling us not to buy the drug since our mum had left us," he said.

Daniel Katua, the hospital's superintendent told the press that the pharmacist went home and didn't tell anyone and nothing could have been done.

He said that those who could have replaced him were on Christmas leave.

"Yes it should be opened 24 hours but the problem with last night was that the pharmacist was not feeling well but failed to update us in time to make arrangements for the time being. He started feeling unwell two days ago," said Katua.
