Before 90s, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and the current opposition leader Kizza Besigye were comrades, a tag associated with their struggle to liberate Uganda.
The two worked jointly and Museveni would always consult the learned young Colonel whenever necessary during his infantry stage as President.
But their relationship deteriorated in early 90s in what many observers have linked to the love for one woman, who happens to be Besigye's wife.
Winnie Byanyima, a renowned politicians, diplomat and activist briefly dated Museveni in 1980s before the two broke over irreconcilable differences.
Years later, she would meet Besigye in France where the two fell in love and married. The move reportedly never went down well with Museveni.
“It was not about politics. Some people think that maybe we were fighting Museveni – not at all. At that time I was very much in agreement with Museveni.
"I have always had some doubts about Museveni but Besigye and I were both cadres of the Movement and there was nothing political about our relationship. It was purely discovering each other through the tragedy of a comrade," she said in a past interview.
Besigye, the current opposition leader, in a past interview, said that the relationship was challenging at fast due to the fact that she had dated Museveni.
“It was challenging because she had previously had a relationship with Museveni which I knew about. It had quite obviously fallen through, in fact broken rather badly,” he said.
For years now, Museveni has been at loggerheads with Besigye, with the police often arresting him in the streets of Kampala. In the last election, Besigye claimed victory.
Winnie was recently appointed the Director of the United Nations programme in the fight against HVI and AIDS. She also worked for Oxfam.
