Speaking to members of the press on Saturday, the televangelist who anointed President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto in the lead up to the 2017 elections warned parliamentarians against pursuing legislation designed to hinder donations to churches.

Accusing politicians of hypocrisy during campaigns, Mwai said that church-goers were not being forced to donate as the donations were being made on a voluntary basis.

"The parliamentarians that we elected should know that we reject what they are discussing regarding donations towards constructing churches (Parliament yetu ambaye tulichagua wajue ya kwamba yale mambo wanaongea kuhusu ya kutoa pesa ya kujenga kanisa hiyo mambo tumeikataa), " he said in part of a report aired by Citizen TV in a video shared on YouTube. His words came hot on the heels of an announcement by the Catholic church to rein in on donations to churches made by corrupt politicians.

The Catholic church announced on Saturday protocols that it said will guide donations to its churches across the country.

Donations to churches have been a touchy issue and continue to dominate the national political discourse.

Among those in the spotlight over huge donations in church fundraisers is Deputy President Dr William Ruto who has strongly rejected the criticism levelled against him.
