This follows the creation of a vacuum in that position following the apparent exit of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, who has been missing in action since his 2018 truce with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

According to the International Relations Professor, contrary to what many are saying, the holder of the position doesn't have to be Raila, and its only a matter of time before another person takes over.

"Opposition is not a person, it is a phenomenon that is still here with us," he told the Standard on Sunday, insinuating that it doesn't have to be a specific person.

And while he says that the opposition chief will still emerge from the opposition's National Super Alliance (NASA) formation, he opined that it cannot be Ford Kenya boss Moses Wetangula.

Similarly, he said, it's very unlikely to be Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) chief and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka.

"The reality is that people like Musalia Mudavadi are making the right noises. Moses Wetang’ula has come out too to try and claim that space so has Kalonzo Musyoka," he added.

Following the handshake, Mudavadi has been seen attempting to play in Raila's position, and has been trying to keep the government on check with regards to loans and borrowings.

Wetangula has not been as vocal while Kalonzo has as well been silent on national matters.
