Initially, the former police officer who was serving at Capital Hill police post had been given a death sentence in the murder case of James Ng'ang'a who was the son of ex-MP Patrick Muiruri.

The death sentence was however turned into life imprisonment.

According to Standard Media, High Court Judge Luka Kimaru on September 25 reduced the life imprisonment to a 20-year jail year term.

The new sentence takes effect from the day that Munene was found guilty which was on October 12, 2011.

The years that Munene had already served were therefore factored in during the resentencing.

It was alleged that Munene together with his friend friend Alexander Chepkonga were involved in the murder of Ng'ang'a after an altercation at Crooked Q in Westlands.

Chepkonga on the other hand successfully appealed the death sentence he had been given and was consequently set free.

“Taking into account the entire circumstances of this case, this court is of the view that the sentence of life imprisonment that was imposed on him will not serve the ends of justice,” Kimaru said during his ruling.
