Secretary for Innovation, Digital and Diaspora Communication in the Office of The President Dennis Itumbi has said that President Uhuru Kenyatta has no plans to cling on to power after 2022.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Itumbi said that President Kenyatta will retire peacefully after he completes his second and final term in office.
He noted that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) will not make Uhuru change his mind as far as power is concerned offering that Uhuru has played his part and he still has more time to complete the projects he started before leaving.
"The President Uhuru Kenyatta I know - is NOT interested in staying in office beyond his second term. The statement by David Murathe and Atwoli must be viewed as personal opinions and individual wishes. This is DPM Uhuru in a 2011 interview with @KeEquityBank boss James Mwangi," he tweeted.
Before the release of the BBI report, Uhuru said that he has no problem taking over as the Prime Minister.
“I do not know the contents of the BBI report yet. I hear people claiming Uhuru Kenyatta wants to become the Prime Minister of Kenya. I wouldn’t mind being in leadership in such a post, though let us deal with the current situation first,” Kenyatta said.
The debate on whether Uhuru will leave power or not has continued to elicit mixed reactions from different factions.
Deputy President William Ruto's camp wants Uhuru to endorse his candidature before 2022.
