Speaking in Migori county, she urged girls to focus their minds on developing themselves.

'Getting pregnant at the age of 14, 13 cannot be a skill, it cannot be a business, it cannot be a job... It is destructive," she said

Her intervention into the matter comes in the wake of what appears to be an early pregnancy crisis that has seen school going girls abandon their studies to nurse pregnancies.

Girls hailing from poor families are especially at risk of early teenage pregnancies if the media reports are anything to go by.

A survey by the Global Child made a damning revelation on Kenya's efforts in tackling teenage pregnancies, that not much was being done to deal with the problem.

The survey found that in 2016, 82 teenage girls were giving birth in every 1,000 girls.

In it's report, Save The Child said Kenya had a long way to go in curbing child marriages and teenage pregnancies.

Part of the drivers of early marriages and teenage pregnancies have been cultures and traditional customs that encourage them.
