Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina has raised tough questions about the presence of his two colleagues in Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's legal team.
Governor Sonko was taken to court on Monday over alleged illegal tendering of Sh357 million, a claim raised by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr and his Elgeyo-Marakwet counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen are among 12 lawyers representing him in court.
With the Senate's role being oversight over county governments, Ole Kina took to Twitter to question the presence of the two in court, yet they are custodians of county funds.
"My two colleagues Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and Kipchumba Murkomen are appearing for Mike Sonko. I am trying to figure this out ? Is there a thin line between law makers and corruption allegations? What’s your opinion on lawyers generally? And especially in such circumstances? Lawyers as Legislators?" he posed.
The two senators also seat at the Senate Public Accounts Committee by the virtue of positions they hold.
Murkomen is the Majority Leader while Mutula is the Minority whip.
Despite the complaints, there is no legal basis to block parliamentarians who are lawyers from representing clients in court.
Siaya Senator James Orengo and his Nyamira counterpart Okong'o Mogeni are representing Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu in a corruption case.
