Renowned lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has now claimed that the ongoing Mau evictions are being supported by a good percentage of Kenyans.
Taking his revelations to his Twitter account, the senior counsel divulged that the move to flush out the squatters should not be a topic of discussion.
However, he has noted that the government should be responsible and resettle the evictees while wondering how the Tea factories based in the area will be managed.'
'Restoration of the Mau forest and removal of squatters and the HUGE TEA FACTORIES is not negotiable. This exercise is supported by 99% of Kenyans. The govt must be humane in the exercise and help in the resettlement of the squatters... and the TEA FACTORIES?...can we have a list...,'' tweeted Ahmednasir.
His sentiments come amid 'resistance' by a section of Rift Valley leaders who have termed the eviction illegal and politically instigated.
“It is not even about tribes or regions, but about a few individuals who are power-hungry … and the issue of the referendum, lifestyle audit, corruption propaganda and now the Mau issue are all targeted at one person.
“The evictions are a targeted campaign against the Deputy President to prevent him from becoming the president in 2022,'' said Nandi County senator Samson Cherargei as quoted by Nation.
Government spokesman Cyrus Oguna has since noted that the order was given from President Uhuru Kenyatta's government in a bid to conserve the environment, as more evictions in Mt Kenya and Aberdare forests will occur.
