In what could be a looming political partnership between Maendeleo Chap Chap and ODM, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua on Saturday hosted the latter in Kitui for a major rally.

For months, Mutua, Governors Charity Ngilu and Kivutha Kibwana, have been drifting away from Ukambani kingpin Kalonzo Musyoka, a move that could determine the region's future.

Mutua, serving his second term, will be the host in the homecoming of Musee Mati of Maendeleo Chap Chap, who won Mutonguni ward seat in October.

He garnered 2,892 votes to defeat Wiper's Stephen Kithuka, who got 2,147 votes.

Maendeleo Chap Chap is wrestling with Wiper for dominance in the Ukambani region.

"With Invited leaders from Maendeleo Chap Chap Party and The Orange Democratic Party ahead of the Mutonguni Thanksgiving Rally in Kitui County," Mutua posted on Facebook.

Among those present in the rally are ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, Nyamira Senator Okong'o Mogeni and Nyamira Woman Representative Jerusha Momanyi among others.

Early this month, Sifuna hinted on a coalition between ODM and other parties following the hotly contested Kibra by-election.

“We have said this before, we are counting our friends in Kibra. New alliances will be forged from this by-election,” Mr Sifuna had said as quoted by Daily Nation.

According to Dr Mutua, the future of Kenya lies with committed leaders “like Raila Odinga, who will show Kenyans the way”.

“My party will consult with ODM on how we will field candidates in the 2022 General Election so that we get the numbers to change this country,” he said during Kibra rally.
