A 14-year-old boy from Likoni, Mombasa, committed suicide after he was accused of stealing Sh400.

The body of the class four pupil at Puma Primary School was discovered by the late boy's mother on Saturday night at around 7.30 pm. The body of Ali Mgeni Mlei was dangling on a bedsheet from the roof of his parent's house.

"When I arrived home at around 7pm my other young children told me Ali was hanging on the roof and when I got in I thought my son was standing on two 20 litre jericans of water. I could not comprehend what I was seeing,’’ Tumaini Nzikali, the mother to the deceased boy, told the Standard.

According to a report by the local daily, a local food vendor is alleged to have accused the young boy of stealing money from her house.

The accusations were accompanied by threats from the woman who is reported to have been a friend and neighbour to the boy's family for approximately five years. The food vendor is nonetheless alleged to have gone into hiding after the news of the boy's suicide emerged.

The father of the deceased blamed the woman for the child's death arguing that she should be held accountable for her actions.

"The woman should be held accountable for the death of my son. I am pleading with the police and the government to arrest her for justice to prevail," said Mwadzuiya Kombo Ndune.

Likoni police chief Benjamin Rotich confirmed the incident, noting that investigations into the case had begun to identify the exact cause of death.
