Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko will have to withstand pressure from Rift Valley leaders amid impending evictions from Mau forest.
Last week, Mr Tobiko insisted that the eviction exercise shall go on as planned, with Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya confirming the government position.
Over 10,000 families who have reportedly encroached the forest will lose homes with several students also set to miss out national exams.
But in a scathing attack targeting Tobiko, Belgut MP Nelson Koech on Sunday dismissed Tobiko as an idiot, adding that nobody shall move out of the water catchment area.
“Keriako Tobiko is an idiot. A loser who couldn’t even prosecute a fly when he was a DPP. Now he wants to flex his muscles on innocent children.
On innocent expectant mothers who are living in the Mau. On vulnerable people who are staying in the Mau and purporting to evict them. I tell him today, we are not going anywhere and he must listen right,” he said in part.
Rift Valley leaders have piled pressure on government over the impending evictions, with some demanding that President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto intervene.
Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi on Saturday pleaded with Uhuru to intervene, arguing that the evictions are unfair and contrary to the agreement made by Jubilee administration with the occupants.
"My humble request to Uhuru over Mau evictions is that he fundraised for this people when Raila Odinga was chasing them. He came in 2013 and asked them to vote for him. What Happened after 2017 that makes him to plot to kick them away?
"Stop damaging the lives of the poor because you're not going to contest. Children in Mau are like those in your house. If you want to chase them, you have over 50,000 Ha. Give them around 7,000 because after all the land is not yours," he said.
