Eldoret Hawkers on Tuesday presented a petition to Uasin Gishu County Assembly over-regulation and legislation of the sector in the County.
The petition was presented by the Central Organization of Hawkers Association Kenya through a communication from the deputy speaker Hosea Lamai.
“We have received a petition to Uasin Gishu County Assembly from Central Organization of Hawkers Association Kenya. This is a petition concerning lack of recognition and engagement as stakeholders by the Uasin Gishui County government,” said Lamai.
“As citizens of the County, they want to draw attention to the County Assembly since the inception of the Uasin Gishu County government inherited hawkers bylaws and signed Memorandums Central Organization of Hawkers Association Kenya and the defunct municipal council has not been implemented,” he added.
He further said that the memorandums provided a framework on regulating and licensing of hawkers in Central Business District (CBD) and protected hawking from political interference, manipulation nepotism and corruption hence make hawking a two-party issue which one party cannot make a decision affecting the sector without involving the other one.
The deputy speaker directed the committees of Trade and Physical Planning to look into the matter. Uasin Gishu County Government has not been having good times with hawkers citing harassment by county askaris.
