Fear and confusion gripped residents of Uvaini area in Mwala sub-county of Machakos county on Saturday after a coffin lid was discovered in the area.
The lid in question was found near Ghetto stage along Machakos-Kitui road by residents.
However, the circumstances that led to the discovery of the part of a coffin in the area are still unknown.
According to the residents, the lid was causing ritual fears in the region and something needed to be done.
Led by one Mutua Kitonyi the residents claimed that they took upon themselves to burn the lid after no one came out to claim ownership after a few hours.
"It was in the morning hours when we discovered the coffin lid, we are not sure where it came from this area has been experiencing accidents so fear gripped us and residents started forming small groups discussing the issue," said Kitonyi.
"We waited until noon to see if anyone would ask about it and when no one came we decided to burn it so that we can bring down the fear amongst us. You know a coffin lid isn't something you come across daily," he added.
