Efforts to retrieve their bodies on Monday were futile.

Relatives of Mariam Kigenda and her daughter Amanda Wambua camped at the Likoni Channel after the news broke on Sunday evening.

Kigenda's husband John Wambua, claimed that a rescue mission had not yet begun 20 hours after the incident.

"My wife and daughter are still under the ocean," the tearful Wambua said

The family members who were at the island side of the ocean from as early as 6:00 am complained about the delay in starting the recovery operation.

Kenya Ferry Services Managing Director Bakari Gowa, on the other hand, reported that assessment by experts had revealed that the car had sunk 60 meters into the ocean making the recovery operation difficult.

"We have carried out an assessment and established that the place where the vehicle sunk is 60 m deep and requires specialised equipment to retrieve," Gowa noted.

Following the accident, concern has been raised over the safety of the people using the ferries which are in a bad condition.

More than 300,000 pedestrians and 6,000 cars are ferried across the ocean daily.

The MV Harambee from which the car fell is reported to have been lacking the safety features that would have helped in saving the lives of those trapped inside the car.
