It is now official that Kenyan footballer McDonald Mariga is a candidate for the upcoming Kibra constituency by-election.
Mariga will face 15 other candidates who are eyeing the seat on a Jubilee Party ticket in party's nomination which is expected to take place before the November 7, 2019, mini polls.
Jubilee's National Election Board (NEB) Chairman Andrew Musangi on Friday confirmed Mariga's candidacy stating that a total of 16 candidates are eyeing the seat through the party.
"As by 5.30 pm on Friday, we had received a list of 16 candidates. We are proceeding with interviews and by Monday afternoon, a decision on who will be the Jubilee party ticket flagbearer will be officially announced,” said Musangi.
Mariga who has been playing for several international clubs is currently in the country and he is not signed under any football team.
The Kibra seat fell vacant after its immediate former lawmaker Ken Okoth succumbed to cancer in July this year.
Many other candidates from different political parties in the country have already declared their interests in leading Kibra residents as voters prepare to go back to the ballot box on November 7.
