A group of protesters on Friday best Zimbabwe Foreign Affairs minister Dr Sibusiso Moyo outside Royal Institute of International Affairs commonly called Chatham House, London.
The team mainly comprising of Movement for Democratic Change supporters in London frogmarched the retired Lieutenant General, forcing him to scamper for his safety, reports the Times Live.
Moyo is in England leading a Zimbabwean delegation on a four-day re-engagement programme to strengthen bilateral relations and to woo investment for Zimbabwe.
His visit comes at a time when Zimbabwe is also seeking readmission to the Commonwealth.
A Zimbabwean academic based in London, Dr Admore Tshuma, said the protesters were MDC Alliance supporters, and called for the Zimbabwean embassy in London to do something about the embarrassing incident.
“Foreign affairs minister Moyo being attacked by MDC supporters in London today. This must be condemned. The Zimbabwe embassy must get the perpetrators arrested. The UK is a democracy with law and order no matter what,” he said.
Earlier, Sibusiso had urged British government and the West to drop numerous sanctions imposed on the South African nation, many dating to the time of former ruler Robert Mugabe.
“We agreed at the time that Zimbabwe and the UK must be partners in unlocking whatever perception of Zimbabwe the Americans had. The reforms we are undertaking are for the benefit of our people. Sanctions are outdated and don’t serve either Zimbabwe or the US,” he said at a meeting with potential business investors from Britain.
Besides the dwindling economy, the supports of Nelson Chamisa led MDC are unhappy with alleged brutality by military generals targeting them in Zimbabwe.
Mr Moyo is the one who announced ouster of Mugabe in 2017 on a live TV. He played a major role in installation of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
MDC is the major opposition party in Zimbabwe for the last decade. It's founder, Morgan Tsvangirai, who died in 2018 before polls, was a great confidant of Raila Odinga.
