It all started by a letter from her communication office on Monday, which started that she was in a recovery trend, a message that may have given her supporters hope.
Communication Director Ezra Kirui said the governor was recuperating, adding that doctors had strictly advised limited visitation, to allow her fully recover.
“The governor is recuperating and is under observation by her doctors who have recommended [for] her enough rest and limited visitation for speedy recovery,” County Communications Director Ezra Kirui said in the statement.
But hours later, news about passing of of Bomet's second governor, dominated headlines, with condolences trickling in given her soft spoken attitude.
Since May, Governor Laboso has been battling cancer, something that was kept a close family secret. Last week, leaders led by Deputy Governor Dr Hillary Barchok, asked Kenyans to pray for her.
"Let's pray for our governor. She is still in hospital and I am glad to say she is improving. As a county, let us join her family during this trying period," he said without disclosing the facility where she's admitted.
Former Konoin MP Julius Kones added: "High octane politics should stop. We should pray for our governor. Let other things come later."
Born 58 years ago in Sotik, Laboso made her name in scholarly world, with a longest stint at Egerton University as senior lecturer being the most notable.
At Egerton, Laboso, who was married to Edwin AbonyoAbonyo and blessed with three children, was a guru in linguistics, a subject she loved dearly.
But in 2008, she was forced to abandon lecture room for politics following the demise of her sister, Lorna Laboso, the then Sotik MP on ODM ticket.
During the by-election, ODM sponsored her and she completed her sister's term. In 2013, Dr Laboso defended successfully her seat on Jubilee, and would be elected as Deputy Speaker of National Assembly later on.
In 2017, Laboso became of of the first ever female governors along with Charity Ngilu and Ann Waiguru. She defeated CCM leader Isaac Ruto on a Jubilee ticket.
Governor Laboso becomes the third county boss to die in office after Governors Gakuru Wahome and Nderitu Gachagua, all from Nyeri County.
And after 12 years of elective politics, she lost a battle to cancer, just three days after Kibra MP Ken Okoth also succumbed to the monster. Dr Hillary Barchok will take over as substantive governor.
