The DCI on Tuesday revealed that the two took off after they were intercepted by the police while transporting the cigarettes worth Sh10 million.

“Further investigations are ongoing including search for KRA official and APS Kenya officer believed to have been escorting the lorry and escaped after they were intercepted by DCI detectives,” said the DCI as quoted by Citizen Digital

Two other suspects, Moses Muriithi Waweru  and Josephat Kamau were arrested by the police in Uasin Gishu County while ferrying the cigarettes.

The two who were arrested on Monday were arraigned in court and charged accordingly.

Their compatriots are on the run and the police have launched a hunt for them.

The Supermarch cigarettes labeled ‘For Export’ did not have official KRA stamps.

At the time of the arrest, the cigarettes were found hidden in a compartment of a Mitsubishi Lorry.

This comes at a time the country, through the KRA has declared total war against contraband items in the country.

It is not the first time government officials have been caught in corruption scandals across the country.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was hailed for his fight against corruption by International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director for African Department Mr Abebe Selassie, declared that no one will be spared in the fight against this vice.
