Iran's supreme leader has weighed in on an attack on an American-operated airbase that saw dozens of missiles fired, CNBC has reported.
Addressing Iranians, Ayatolah Ali Khamenei said that the attack on the airbase was a slap in the face, signalling that more attacks were on the way in retaliation for the killing Qassem Soleimani, a top Iranian military commander killed in an American airstrike.
He said that beyond military attacks, Iran would be seeking to end America's presence in the Middle East region.
"Last night we slapped them in the face," Khamenei said in his speech in the capital, Tehran, as quoted by Aljazeera.
"What is important is that the corrupt presence of the US in this region should come to an end," he added.
A huge crowd came to listen to the supreme leader's address amid heightening tensions with the United States of America.
He also took time to express his condolences to the families of the victims of a stampede on Tuesday during the burial ceremony for Qassem Soleimani.
"I'm very sorry for that and I'm very sad for that," Khamenei said according to Aljazeera. "I would like to express my condolences to their families ... I wish their spirits, their souls, join the soul of Soleimani," he added.
