Garissa Governor Ali Bunow Korane has said the locust invasion ravaging parts of North Eastern Kenya has crossed over into Garissa.
He made the revelation in a tweet on Saturday, amid efforts by the government to curb the invasion.
In the tweet, the county boss said the spraying operation would be extended to Garissa County on Sunday.
"Regrettably the desert locust swarms have crossed into Garissa County from Wajir today. In coordination with an intergovernmental team handling the emergency, aerial sprays will be extended to Garissa County from tomorrow," Governor Korane tweeted.
In a series of tweets on Saturday, government spokesman Col(Rtd) Cyrus Oguna said the national government had acquired 30,000 tonnes of chemicals and spraying capacity to help contain the invasion.
"Distribution of hand held sprayers together with proactive gears have been done to the counties of Marsabit, Wajir and Isiolo. The chemicals to be used have been tested, registered and authorised for the control of locust, hence not harmful if used according to the guidelines," the government spokesman said on Saturday.
The locusts have been established to have come from neighbouring Somalia and Ethiopia.
Panic struck into the hearts of residents this week when the destructive insects descended, with appeals for quick help being made to the national government.
