A former police inspector on Friday graduated with a degree in law at Kamiti Maximum Prison, 11 years into his sentence, reports The Star.
Mr Dickson Munene was found guilty of killing former assistant minister Patrick Muiruri's son James Ng'ang'a, after a night out at Westlands.
In 2011, Justice Mohamed Warsane condemned him to the death sentence but he successfully appealed to have it reduced to 21 years.
Munene says he regrets the incident and has severally asked the family of the deceased to forgive his actions.
“I have many times prayed for Muiruri’s family that God will grant them a forgiving heart," said Munene.
"I pray that God will give them another source of happiness. I have forgiven myself and accepted my fate. One day I pray that I will be able to sit down with them so that we can amend that which was broken," he added.
According to him, he never imagined that one day he would be locked in a prison. He was serving at Capitol Hill Police Station in Nairobi.
"Initially it was very hard, I used to bring people here to the prison. I never imagined it would someday happen to me," he said.
The former cop is also a graduate in economics from the University of Nairobi. He holds an MBA in entrepreneurship from Strathmore where he is pursuing his PhD.
"I'm now in my twelfth year and it has not been easy. After my case, I wanted to do law to help inmates," Munene said.
He said that despite his academic achievements, he has decided to move on after losing his family. His wife has since cut contact with him.
