According to Uriri Member of Parliament Mark Nyamita, this is the only way residents of Migori County can feel the benefits of Uhuru's truce with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

He made the remarks on Fiday, when he attended a number of functions across the county.

"We held a consultative meeting at Kuna and later paid our last respects to Madam Okech Odundo. In both events,we asked Rais Uhuru Kenyatta to allocate more funds to SONY Sugar Company Ltd as that's the only way the people of Migori County can feel the benefits of the "Handshake", said the lawmaker.

The company, one of the state-owned factories in the country, has been grappling with among others, debts owed to cane farmers, with area leaders rejecting attempts to privatise it.

The calls come only a month after Raila, while touring the region, promised that the government will be reviving the factory to prevent it from stopping operations.

''The government is well aware of problems facing the sugar factory and is doing everything possible to salvage it from grinding to a halt,’’ he said when he toured the region in early September.
