Former Minister in the Office of the President Mbiyu Koinange was a controversial figure and at the same time a rich man and a notable name.

But also stuck on his name was his tendency to go to whatever heights to ensure that his interests remained untouched, even if it would cost the entire nation.

According to former Subukia MP Koigi Wa Wamwere, Koinange would show this side of him when he opposed education on grounds that it would stalk operations in his coffee farms.

Wamwere on Saturday revealed one instance, when they were both in Parliament, where Koinange became terrified in hearing that all Kenyans would be subjected to education.

He said on hearing about the reports, Mbiyu, then Kiambaa MP, opposed the rule as he would incur losses in his farms, as it would include his workers.

"Mbiyu said if everybody goes to school who will pick coffee in my farms? To hell with the law, let some people stay at home. (Mbiyu Koinange aliuliza kila mtu akisoma ni nani atachuna kahawa yangu? Potelea mbali, wacha wengine wakae nyumbani)," he said on Radio Sauti Ya Mwananchi's Cheche show.

But Mbiyu was not new to controversy, and had been at the center of it since his days in the first government.
