The trajectory of Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i as a performer and defacto leader of Abagusii may have already complicated Raila Odinga's matrix ahead of 2022.
Already having had four unsuccessful attempts, Mr Odinga is even keener to have a major say in 2022, with close allies hinting that he could have a fifth stab.
But even before he makes such an arrangement, he's aware of Dr Fred Matiang'i, and even acknowledged on Friday at Nyanturago that he knows about Matiang'i's quest.
However, Mr Odinga asked his allies pushing to have Matiang'i on board to slow down so that they don't 'spoil for him'. He cautioned against early campaigns.
“He is very hardworking man. As such, don’t remind me what I am supposed to do. Time is not ripe. Hold your horses,” Raila said of Matiang’i in Kisii on Friday.
Governors John Nyagarama and James Ongwae, who were elected on ODM, had asked Mr Odinga to consider backing Dr Matiang'i for the presidency in 2022.
“Our son qualifies to be the country’s president. We should walk together in this,” Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama told Raila as his Kisii counterpart James Ongwae told the former PM to teach Matiang’i a few things.
Borabu MP Ben Momanyi was even more specific, asking Mr Odinga to endorse Dr Matiang'i, adding that his blessings are vital in 2022 game plan.
"We respect you Jakom. We know you are a Panafricanist. Just declare Matiang'i Tosha and everything will end very early," he said.
But Mr Odinga will also have to deal with Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula, who have backed his previous State House attempts.
With a referendum looming, it's now clear how Odinga intends to have executive expanded, but it could be a tough balancing act given the already emerging opposition on additional of more seats.
Also, Deputy President William Ruto seems to be rapidly expanding his territory, further complicating the matrix for the 2022 polls which Odinga aims to take over from Uhuru Kenyatta.
