The lobbyists have now urged President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is serving his second and final term in government, to declare an ecological emergency in a bid to save the environment,

The conservationists believe that the move will be critical as far as stimulating action is concerned.

Led by Ms Paula Kahumbu of Wildlife Direct, the environmentalists believe that both land and marine environments deserve to be taken good care of.

The environmentalists argued that rivers and other water bodies have continued to dry because of lack of conservation, adding that it will only take the government's intervention to protect the environment.

“Most of the rivers are drying up and fish are dying in our lakes. Forests are burning and our magnificent coral reefs are dying. The consequences for humans are also devastating," read the petition.

They noted that the changes in the environment have led to the death of different animal and plant species.

The environmentalists opine that the government needs to go an extra mile to ensure that the environment is protected from different forms of hazards.

The lobbyists have appealed to President Uhuru to engage other stakeholders from different sectors to ensure that the environment is not destroyed further.
