He came, conquered and left on a low-key fashion and with 2022 election fast approaching, former Likoni MP Masoud Mwahima is facing a race against time to save his political career.

But how did the once-high flying lawmaker end up becoming a political outcast in the region he once reigned supreme?

Perhaps this is one of the wonders of modern politics.

After being at the heart of Mombasa politics for decades, becoming the Mayor of the country's second-largest city underscored his growing political muscle.

In 2007, he confirmed to Kenya that he was not a political lightweight when he trounced a powerful minister in President Mwai Kibaki's government, Suleiman Rashid Shakombo.

Mwahima would later dominate Likoni politics for the next 10 years while completely consigning Shakombo into a political dustbin. David had conquered Goliath and he was now the King.

Then came 2016. With no clear reason, Mwahima made surprise political move to dump ODM party that had on two occasions sponsored him to Parliament. His fate was sealed. The ambitious veteran was consumed by his own ambitions.

Today, 2016 must be ringing in his mind as a year that spoiled everything.

Mwahima would end up being thrashed by Mishi Mboko in 2017, leaving him in a political limbo perhaps planning on his next course of action.

Will he rise on his feet again? Well, only time will tell.

With no job from the very Jubilee Party that cost him his seat in 2017, he has a mountain to climb.
