Speaking on Saturday at the Bukhungu Stadium, the legislator urged leaders from Western Kenya to call President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga for a meeting to discuss the issues.

"Call for a meeting as leaders of Western with Raila and Uhuru so that you can resolve the issues facing Mumias. To Wetangula and Mudavadi, the journey is still long (Itisheni mkutano nyinyi kama viongozi wa Western, mkae chini na 'Baba' na Uhuru mtatue mambo ya Mumias...Wetangula na Ndugu yangu mkubwa, Musalia safari bado ni ndefu)," the Cherangany MP said.

The sugar company was placed under receivership last year as its financial woes deepened.

Locals have for a long time called on the national government to intervene to help it overcome its challenges.

The company is a great source of employment and a major part of the Western Kenya economy.

Receiver Manager Ponangipalli Venkata Ramana Rao told legislators last year that the former Mumias Sugar Company directors had failed to hand over crucial documents.

“Until the directors provide information on the creditors, debtors, staff, assets and liabilities of Mumias Sugar Company, the receiver cannot do much,” Mr Rao told the legislators.
