Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha on Wednesday raised concerns over the high number of unregistered schools in the country.
Speaking at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Prof Magoha said that it has come to his attention that a total of 3,000 schools are yet to be registered despite being operational.
He said he was embarrassed to inform President Uhuru Kenyatta that his office had ordered for the closure of 2,000 schools only for the number to rise after further investigations.
“I was ashamed to tell the president that we had closed 2,000 unregistered schools in the country,” said Magoha, as quoted by the Daily Nation.
He also faulted the quality insurance officers for failing to capture the accurate figure of the schools yet to be registered. He noted that the inspectors have been undertaking the exercise after six years instead of per term as expected of them.
Magoha also reminded the regional and county directors to get in touch with the reality on the ground and not wait until calamity befalls before they swing into action.
The CS also affirmed that the government has no plan of changing its tune as far as the closure of the schools is concerned. He insisted that all schools that do not comply with the safety requirements will be closed down with immediate effect.
