The proprietors of Mathai Supermarket in Ruiru are counting losses after a fire destroyed the property in a matter of hours.
Confirming the incident, Ruiru DCIO Cyrus Ombati noted that the fire broke out at around 2.30 am at one of the corners of the premises before spreading to the rest of the building.
It remains unclear what caused the fire. Most of the goods on the premises were destroyed.
The efforts of the firefighters to put out the fire were hampered due to water shortage. The fire engines travelled all the way from Thika, Kiambu, and Nairobi to contain the inferno after it emerged that things were running out of control.
Police have commenced a probe into the incident. No cases of death have been reported yet following the incident.
Members of the general public helplessly watched as the building went up in flames.
