Persons living with disabilities (PLWDs) in Uasin Gishu now want the county government to ensure that both old and upcoming buildings are accessible to them.
According to Uasin Gishu County Director of the National Council of People with Disabilities (NCPWD), Titus Yego, over 60 percent of the buildings cannot be accessed by PLWDs
“I am calling upon the County Government to ensure that the People with disability Act that says that every building should be accessed with PWD’s is implemented,” said Yego in Eldoret town on Thursday.
“It is hard for those using wheelchairs to access supermarkets, ATM and even the Office of the Governor which has essential services for us. While constructing houses, let us put in mind PWD’s,” added Yego.
Government agencies mandated to ensure that law is enforced have been slow in implementation and we urge that they step up efforts so that all new buildings coming up can be accessed by the disabled with minimum efforts,” said Kioko.
He called on the county government to have a lift in the building or have offices most accessed by PLWDs to the ground floor.
Yego also challenges those with disabilities to contest for elective positions.
