A 23-year-old man from Gem, Siaya County has been arrested after killing his 15-year-old cousin whom he wanted to marry.
The man is said to have acted out of anger and killed the Form Two student after he was stopped from marrying the girl identified as Margaret Auma.
Gem Deputy County Commissioner Geoffrey Mayama who confirmed the incident said the man had earlier been arrested and arraigned in court after he was accused of allegedly raping the minor.
Mayama who received information from Central Gem Location Chief Barack Oloo said the suspect who is currently being held at Yalla Police Station was out on bond after he was released by the court.
The suspect stabbed the girl several times with a kitchen knife after he lured her into a bush next to her home in Sinderma village.
The suspect stabbed the Form Two student from Sirembe Secondary School after she turned down his advances and fled the scene.
The man left behind a letter at the scene that read, “I was madly in love with you but I had to do this. Till we meet again. I will join you soon.”
The suspect was, however, arrested by the police at a hideout in Wagai village after the matter was reported.
Chief Oloo said the girl’s family were aware of the relationship between the suspect and Auma and were trying to end it since they were close relatives.
“Around 1 pm, the family heard one loud scream. They immediately identified the voice and ran outside the compound to check, only to find the body of their child lying in a pool of blood. The killer had fled but he left a note.”
“The issue about that relationship had been taken to the police and later Siaya court by the parents of the deceased. The suspect was recently released on bail, but when he returned home, he threatened the girl with death if she could not marry him. He also threatened the deceased mother,” said the chief.
