The services of the account were briefly taken over before he swung into action to counter the hack.

BBC reports that the hackers posted unexpected messages through the account during the short take over. It remains unclear why the hackers chose to commit such an act.

The group, which later identified itself as the Chuckling Squad, has claimed responsibility of the hack. The group posted some offensive and racist remarks on the account after taking over for around 15 minutes.

The tweets elicited mixed reactions from online users with some expressing their dissatisfaction over the same.

The CEO has, however, said that the account has not been compromised in any way, adding that everything is under control after the hacking was undertaken by the group.

"The phone number associated with the account was compromised due to a security oversight by the mobile provider," Twitter said in a statement.

"This allowed an unauthorised person to compose and send tweets via text message from the phone number. That issue is now resolved."

The hackers reportedly used the technique referred to as SimJacking to access the account without the knowledge of the owner.
