Speaking on Saturday in Fort Tennan in Kisumu, where Dr Laboso will be laid to rest, Brian said his father had exemplified what it meant to stand with one's partner through sickness and through health.

"Dad, I would like to thank you for being there for mum.  You said your vows, 'for better for worse, through health and sickness'; you've really demonstrated that, " Brian Abonyo said.

Dr Edwin Abonyo has won the hearts of scores of Kenyans in the wake of revelations of how he stood with his wife as she battled ovarian cancer for close to two decades.

He was by her side since she was diagnosed with the terminal disease in 1991.

The two travelled together to London and India for specialised treatment.

The late Laboso lost her battle with cancer at a Nairobi Hospital on Monday after returning from India.

She was diagnosed when they were a young couple and were just starting out as husband and wife.

In spite of coming from different communities, the two fell in love with each other and lived together.
