Lawyer and author Miguna Miguna has rubbished the ongoing clamour to amend the Constitution through a referendum.
The debate on constitutional reforms has divided the nation across the middle with some Kenyans rallying behind Thirdway Alliance's Punguza Mizigo Bill 2019, which among other things seeks to scrap nominated seats and establish wards as the primary units of development.
Others have backed the yet to be published proposals by the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) which was formed following the March 9, 2018 handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Miguna has trashed the two competing proposals, saying instead of changing or amending the 2010 constitution, it should be enforced.
"Translation for those who have been hypnotized not to comprehend: I don't support any constitutional amendments - whether by #punguzamzigo or the Handshake team. I support the ENFORCEMENT of the existing Constitution and the struggle to RESTRUCTURE the neocolonial STATE," he tweeted on Saturday.
The outspoken lawyer said the existing constitution has no problem and warned Kenyans that attempts to amend it could be catastrophic.
"Fellow Kenyans: Amending a Constitution you have not implemented or enforced is like trying to renovate a house that you have not completed. It will collapse with tragic consequences. Don't ever say that I did not warn you," he said.
"Amending the Constitution whose purpose is to fortify the existing inequalities and injustices in society without restructuring the state is an exercise in futility. It is like a child believing that he can change the inherent injustices in his life by painting the bathroom," Miguna added.
