A court on Wednesday granted embattled Nairobi Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi powers to conduct house business without any form of restriction.
The directive came after Joy Furaha Mranja, a resident, obtained orders that barred her from presiding over debates at the house.
The orders had also blocked her from bringing any authorized persons to the chambers. While presenting her argument in court, Elachi said that she has the freedom to conduct any form of business without restriction from anyone.
She said that the orders had curtailed her freedom in the capacity of the speaker. She also lamented that different advocates had colluded to ensure that the orders dated October 25, 2019, were obtained to stop her from discharging her duties. She also said that the advocates were only out to masquerade as representative in the legal sense.
“No advocate-client relationship has ever subsisted between Elachi and the said Musyoki and Co. Advocates to permit Mogaka Advocate to enter into any consent in these or any other proceedings on behalf of the respondent,” court documents said, as quoted by The Star.
The orders stopping Elachi from presiding over the sittings were obtained on Thursday last week.
