Speaking during the 42nd General Council of the Organization of African Trade Union (OATUU) on Friday, Raila challenged the South African government to tame the situation.

He said that the attacks are eroding attempts to unite the continent, challenging leaders to unite in suppressing them and taking stern actions against the perpetrators.

“Let the leaders walk the talk by taking stern action against those perpetrating these shameful acts,” he said.

The African Union Infrastructure Development Envoy also encouraged states within the continent to fund infrastructure project to enhance growth.

He expressed his belief that Africa can be developed by its indigenous peoples, adding that through better infrastructure the continent will be open to more opportunities.

"We want to change Africa to be a continent of opportunity, but we cannot realise this unless we open up the continent’s infrastructure," added the former Prime Minister.

Rowdy youths have been wrecking havoc in several parts of South Africa, torching and looting shops believed to be owned by foreigners.

They are accusing the foreigners of taking away job opportunities meant for locals, which has seen some assaulted as well.
