Speaking on Monday, the lawmaker stressed on the need for an audit to take a keen look into the current Constitution before referendum proposals are made.

Should need be, he said on Citizen TV's Daybreak, the referendum should be held as the seventh ballot in the 2022 general elections, in what he says will save the nation from the high costs of conducting two separate poll exercises.

"We need to do an audit to find out where we are and a problem that we need to address to save us from unnecessary expenses. We can have the change together with the general election because the cost and the means are high," he said.

This comes at a time when there are three similar pushes, the latest one being the Council of Governors (CoG) push dubbed the 'Ugatuzi Initiative.

Also in pursuit of changes is the Punguza Mizigo bill, under the leadership of Thirdway Alliance party boss Ekuru Aukot, which seeks to slash elective representation by more than half, especially in the Parliament.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his allies are also pushing for changes, through the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) to among others, revert the nation to the parliamentary system.
