President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered for handing over of soccer legend Joe Kadenge's South B house to his family, ODM leader Raila Odinga has revealed.
Mr Kadenge, a former AFC and Harambee Stars striker died last week after years of struggling with a disease and old age at Nairobi Hospital.
Speaking during a fundraiser at Charter Hall on Tuesday, Mr Odinga, a close friend of Kadenge, said Uhuru had agreed to give back the house which he was given by founding father Jomo Kenyatta before being retaken.
According to him, Governor Mike Sonko's administration is in the final touches on paperwork and the house could be handed over before burial.
“It was Joe’s wish that the house in Mariakani estate be handed over to him and that wish was granted by the President,” he said.
Prior to his death, Kadenge had sought audience with President Uhuru Kenyatta over the house which he insisted for years that belonged to him.
During his youthful days, Kadenge was celebrated by many and is credited for uplifting soccer levels in the country. He scored many goals at club and country levels.
There are also plans to rename historical City Stadium after Mr Joe Kadenge. The county government of Nairobi is also in the final stages over the same.
“Joe was a legend. And that is why I proposed to President Kenyatta on the possibility of renaming City Stadium in his honour” said Raila. “We both have spoken with Sonko and has agreed to fast track the process” he added.
Just like Kadenge, pioneer Kenyan athlete Nyantika Mayioro who died early this year, had also requested President Uhuru Kenyatta to help him recover his piece of land at Borabu which had been grabbed.
