A 22-year-old woman from Likoni constituency has been quarantined at the Mombasa Hospital after showing signs of the deadly Coronavirus.
The Ministry of Health has confirmed the move to isolate the woman, who arrived into the country on January 30 at around 6 am from Guangzhou, China, where she has been pursuing a course in medicine.
The woman reportedly started exhibiting the symptoms while she was still overseas.
The woman, whose real name has not been disclosed, complained about the difficulty in breathing and chest pains. Mombasa County Director of Communication Richard Chacha confirmed that the health facility has taken all the measures to ensure that she is isolated to avoid spreading the virus to other Kenyans.
The woman has been quarantined in a private room at Rehemtullah ward as doctors fight to restore her health status.
"We are not taking any chances," Chacha said.
The doctors at the facility have forwarded her blood samples to Nairobi for screening as well as analysis before any other step can be undertaken. The County's Health Chief Officer Dr Khadija Shikely has asked Kenyans not to spread rumours until the truth is revealed about the condition of the patient.
Shikely also said that the county government has put in place various measures to protect the residents from the spread of the virus. She also said that no family member has been allowed to visit the patient so far.
