Veteran broadcaster and political commentator Cokie Roberts has breathed her last at 75 years of age
Roberts succumbed to breast cancer complications on Tuesday, ABC News announced in a statement.
She curved a niche for herself at a time when there were few women in the political news business.
Her death triggered an outpouring of grief.
Former United States of America President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama in a statement to newsrooms described the veteran political commentator as “a role model to young women at a time when the profession was still dominated by men; a constant over 40 years of a shifting media landscape and changing world, informing voters about the issues of our time and mentoring young journalists every step of the way."
President Trump was not left behind in mourning Roberts, saying that he respected her in spite of her brutal commentaries on him.
“I never met her. She never treated me nicely. But I would like to wish her family well. She was a professional and I respect professionals. I respect you guys a lot, you people a lot. She was a real professional. Never treated me well, but I certainly respect her as a professional, " Trump said in an interview with the American press.
As a political commentator gracing television discussion panels, she came across as a fiercely knowledgeable panellist.
She has been survived by a husband, two children and six grandchildren.
