Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has reacted to claims that he approached Deputy President Dr William Ruto before reaching out to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking exclusively to NTV on Sunday, Raila dismissed Ruto's account that he approached him president first before moving on to President Uhuru.
"Was William Ruto part of this negotiation? " Joseph Warungu the interviewer posed.
"Not at all. Why would I call Ruto? I never did. That I can swear. I never spoke to William Ruto. I was shocked and surprised when Ruto said I had approached him. That is very unethical…" the ODM supremo said.
DP Ruto in an exclusive interview with NTV's Ken Mijungu last week claimed that Raila approached him for talks but he turned down the offer.
Raila said that he took the decision to engage with his then political adversary President Uhuru Kenyatta after being approached by individuals who were concerned about the path that the country had taken.
He said he issued his conditions for the talks with the head of state which were met and the dialogue started leading to the handshake.
At no point in that process, was Ruto involved, Raila said.
