The populous region has never voted for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) boss in his past four bids, but since his handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta, his former fierce critics have turned allies.

However, Mt Kenya is still divided on who to back between Raila and Deputy President (DP) William Ruto, who some argue deserve support for having stood with Uhuru, the region's political kingpin, since 2013.

Outspoken city lawyer Wahome Thuku has waded into the matter, saying he won't hesitate to vote for the former Prime Minister if he vies against the DP.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Thuku said he would vote for Raila, not out of admiration, but to ensure Ruto does not rise to power.

"I DON'T know if Mt Kenya is ready for Raila Odinga Presidency. All I know is that if the ballot has Raila and Ruto, my one vote would go to Raila without a second thought. Not to make him President but to use him to save me from the latter. In fact even if there is another candidate from my family I would not vote for him and risk losing to the latter. And yes I am Mt Kenya damu (by blood)," Thuku posted.

President Uhuru is yet to announce his preferred successor but in a past meeting with Mt Kenya leaders he said his choice will 'surprise' many.
