David Gikambura, 41, was filmed by bystanders wrestling the law enforcer inside his car.

In the video that has since gone viral, Gikambura is seen engaged in a push and pull with the officer next to Nairobi Montessori Preparatory School.

The bystanders then rush to the car and open the door before pulling the officer out, which gives Gikambura the opportunity to drive off.

The officer who is clad in a reflector jacket then tries to give a chase, which proves futile as the driver manages to speed off, before his arrest later in the day by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Here is the video.

In a tweet, the DCI said that the suspect had stolen a phone from the officer, which was recovered and is being held, alongside his vehicle.

"@DCI_Kenya Detectives based in #Karenarrested the suspect; 41-year-old David Kariuki Kamurwa at Gikambura within Kikuyu.
